When I first wrote about women and money more than a decade ago, I focused on the financial realities women face throughout their lives. The importance of being informed. The need to plan for longevity. The possibility of finding yourself single again. The value of starting early.
Those things still matter.
Over the years, I have met with many women who tell me, “My husband takes care of the finances.”
I often think of the woman as the CEO of the household – managing the big picture, making decisions, and keeping everything moving. And in many households, her husband is the CFO, handling the financial details.
There is nothing wrong with that arrangement. But the CEO still needs to understand the numbers.
I have met women who were surprised by how little they knew about their finances. My goal isn’t to turn the CEO into the CFO. It’s to make sure she understands the financial picture and knows what choices are available to her.
What do you want your money to make possible?
Perhaps it is the freedom to change careers, start a business, or take time away from work to raise a family. Maybe it is the ability to walk away from a marriage that is no longer right for you. Perhaps it is retiring when you are ready, helping your children, traveling, or simply knowing you have options when life takes an unexpected turn.
Our financial lives are as individual as we are. We have different goals, different responsibilities, and different dreams. And our money can play a very different role in each of those stories.
That is what makes financial planning so meaningful to me. It is not just about numbers on a statement. It is about understanding what those numbers mean for the life you want to live.
A few pointers:
-
-
- GET CURIOUS: Financial planning starts with understanding your resources, your goals, and the choices available to you. You do not have to know every answer today. Do research on the direction you want your life to go, and then talk with people who can help you get there. There are options to explore – so go there!
- STAY INFORMED: Life can change your financial picture. Divorce, widowhood, a career change, or an unexpected opportunity can all require you to make new decisions. Keep yourself informed about your household finances. This step alone can allow you to make decisions without having to start from scratch.
- SURROUND YOURSELF WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE: You do not have to figure everything out alone. Your team may include trusted professionals such as a financial advisor, attorney, tax professional, and other specialists who can provide guidance as you consider your options.
- GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION TO MAKE CHOICES: Having a financial plan that supports your life is empowering. And as life evolves, your goals and priorities can change too. A good financial plan can provide the peace of mind you need when life takes you in a new direction.
-
There is no single right way to live a financially fulfilling life. The choices you make will depend on your circumstances, your values, and the life you want to build.
But I believe every woman deserves to understand her financial picture and feel confident making decisions about her future.
Your money is part of your story. And you have more choices than you may realize.
A thought to carry with you from T.
Your money can be a tool for building the life you want.
It’s your life – be engaged. Participate. Give yourself grace. Dream.
Allow yourself the freedom to say yes to what matters most to you. Live a life you can be proud of – based on your values and the choices you make.
